Hi there! I am so glad you have made your way to my Cultural Appropriation Paper Doll! Through this activity I want to shed light on the cultural appropriation that took place within the 1940's/50's supper club scene. During this period we saw predominately white crowds enjoy stereotypical club settings for the sake of offering an exotic experience to the masses. Most often these experiences originally excluded POC and anyone who was not caucasian, which meant that they were inauthentic and stereotypical experiences that left the very people it mimicked out of the conversation. I hope this sheds light on just how insensitive cultural approrpiation is and allows you to avoid it and recognize it in the future. I also want to thank the NYC Reliquary for partnering with Parsons' Narrative Space class and allowing us to spotlight their current collection of 40's and 50's supper clubs.
